I stopped by a house in the area selling tomatoes yesterday and I bought a pound of Park’s Whopper home grown tomatoes. Barney runs the show and is an easy fella to talk with. Like me Barney is a Vietnam Vet but unlike me he got an early out because he was wounded. I got wounded but not bad enough to get discharged. He went to Nam in 1969 the year I came back from my second tour and left the Army. Four days later my lovely daughter Theresa was born.
I have been complaining for years that the food industry in order to produce great looking tomatoes that are drought and insect resistant had to disregard flavor. Store bought tomatoes are good for the produce business bad for the home cook.
We ate the tomatoes for dinner last night and my lips thanked me all night. Son Mike and I went back to Barney’s and bought another two pounds: tomato, cucumber & onion salad tonight. His stock was almost gone. I guess folks in the area swarm his place when he has them available.
I never had a Park’s Whopper tomato (not very big despite the name) but the flavor is tremendous. Do your self a favor and get real home grown tomatoes and savor the flavor this summer. Now is the time.
